As an East Asian Medicine Practitioner and Holistic Wellness Coach, over the past few years, I’ve had the good fortune of helping many clients overcome chronic health issues.  I’ve seen it all: Autoimmune conditions, stress, anxiety, and depression, weight-loss challenges, hormonal, fertility, and digestive problems… you name it.

Donley’s Story

I grew up in a loving, supportive family, but I know now that our lifestyle had room for improvement. I learned how to cook from my mom, and she learned from her mother.  She cooked wonderful southern comfort foods!  You know the kind, buttery creamy mashed potatoes, fried chicken with biscuits and gravy, yummy pancakes with loads of super-sweet syrup. Growing up, my father taught me how to tend a magnificent garden, we raised our own pasture-raised beef and pork and had farm fresh eggs most of the time. But the store-bought ingredients were not the best, mostly highly processed foods. We would often deep-fry foods at home, eat cold, sugary cereal for weekday breakfasts, using highly processed white bread for bologna sandwiches with individually wrapped American cheese, drink soda as our main source of hydration, and end the night with a big bowl of ice cream or cake.  Each of our bedrooms had televisions.

I remember my wife (who my family considered to be a “health-nut, yoga doing hippie”) being appalled when I was making popcorn and asked her where she kept the Crisco!  It wasn’t until I was with my wife for a while that I began to realize health was so much more than going to the doctor to get some medication for a problem.  I resisted changing what I grew up with until I started noticing little changes like my pants fitting better, or like my complexion (which was always an issue) beginning to clear up.  I remember having an “awakening” on my 30th birthday that I COULD change my lifestyle without feeling like I was betraying my family.  I COULD meditate, I COULD drink mostly water, I COULD change my diet and still have a great relationship with my parents!  And I also discovered doing Yoga was actually pretty cool!  🙂

My family history has had its share of lifestyle-induced health issues.  I had a grandfather die too young and the other grandfather had open-heart surgery in his early 60s.  I also had a grandmother live the last 10 years of her life in the depths of Alzheimer’s (current research indicates that a major cause is a third type of diabetes). Both of my parents are currently struggling with diabetes as well as other chronic disorders including obesity.  My mother has developed many digestive issues including leaky gut. Watching my grandmother struggle and my parents deal with unnecessary burdens on their health drove me to find a healthier way of life for myself. 

Along that journey, I discovered a passion for helping others with a holistic approach to a higher level of whole-body wellness.  As much as I have learned from them, I have also learned how to break bad lifestyle habits and tweak my foundational cooking habits to become healthier and, really, even tastier than ever! As I was studying Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine, it became even more clear and frustrating to watch my parents drive their health into the ground. They were just too set in their ways and comfort zone to see the value in making big changes, even while knowing it’s their very lifestyle causing the chronic health conditions. This is the motivation behind my mission to help anyone who wants it to improve their wellness so they can stay healthy and fully enjoy all the years in their lives.
